HOMEOWNERSHIP Own a home at a price you can afford. Habitat does not give away free houses. We partner with qualifying families, who purchase the home at no interest and no profit to Habitat. The families help build community by participating in construction of their own home, and their monthly mortgage payments help fund the construction of future homes. There are three basic requirements to becoming a Habitat Homeowner: Need, Ability to Pay, and Willingness to Partner. Eligibility • Itasca County resident • U.S. citizen or legal resident Need • Substandard housing • Overcrowding • Unsafe structure • High rent/income ratio • Accessibility issues Ability to Pay • Stable family income • Income level at or below 50% of HUD Median Income for Itasca County • Monthly income covers expenses • Manageable debt • Ability to pay mortgage Partnership • Willingness to partner with Habitat • Willingness to make long-term commitment • Willingness to accept style and location of house • Willingness to contribute 300 hours of sweat equity for each family member 18 or over (maximum 600 hours) • Willingness to attend homeowner education classes • Participation in budget counseling If you think you fulfill these requirements, take the next step by downloading and filling out an application. |
